I have been tasked to create a headphones (and cell phone) policy for my employer. I am relatively new to this company, but so far they've let everyone listen to headphones and mess around with their phones at any time, anywhere. Even the PIT drivers. It's insane. My initial reaction is to say NO HEADPHONES WHATSOEVER, but my ops manager is concerned it will drastically reduce morale. I suggested that each department should have their own radio and they can play music for everyone to hear, at a reasonable volume. Or maybe the PIT drivers can use bluetooth speakers on their equipment? As for cell phone use, I think we should have designated "safe spaces" and that's it. No one walking-and-talking/texting. Thanks for your suggestions!
Employees can work efficiently when they feel free and comfortable in their workplaces. Headphones and cell phone use is not a problem but it should be banned on workplaces where there is a risky environment like a construction site, Mining, Oil and gas industry etc. Here employers can't take risk of using headphones as it might lead to an accident and may result in death too.
