There are all different types of people. Some like trinkets, some like point totals, some could care less. What if a program was based solely on a hazard identification reporting program? The employee that reports the hazard receives points to accumulate for paid time off. This keeps everyone’s eyes open to help head off potential incidents. This is just a thought on something I’m working on and would also like some feedback. Thanks!

In some environments(union) the biggest challenge is getting employees to accept accountability. When an employee feels that the entire scope of the safety program is solely the responsibility of management, an incentive program, properly managed, can help adjust their thinking. Again, it is all in the management of the program. We have people who could care less about the prizes, they like to brag aboiut their point totals.

I think the Jack pot plan (I have used it) is really a child’s game. I think it would work great in grade school. I know that sounds harsh and no I do not want to be negative; however all too often we look to a cookie cut program to solve our problems because we are often overwhelmed with what is required to keep things moving in the right direction. Word of advice treat employees as adults and appeal to there home and family life. Convince them they are their own business that happens to be working for your business at the present time. Would they want to put their own company at risk?

Dont think there is just one answer to this. Behavor Base Safety, daily safety meetings and the prize/ticket drawings are working here. But I am looking into the prize/ticket program - just want to make sure we are sending the right message. I also looked into Jackpot and too expensive. but if I recall it is also based on injuries, if there is an injury the program stops for a week??? could be wrong

That's on the nose Jason. Paper work will never prevent injuries as well as personal interaction and knowledge of people and process.
