Can anyone send me the criteria they use for one overall safety award? Before my time the company chose to end the incentive program they had; this year I was told we would be awarding one safety award for the employees. I am having a hard time figuring out the criteria. we are a pretty diverse company so to compare a powder coating employee to a commercial installer is difficult.

The Hewitt Associates' Disability Absence Index Survey 2007 indicated that, for an organization with 1,000 employees, disability absence costs exceeded $3 million per year!
A report by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) estimates that by strengthening engagement, Molson Coors saved more than $1.7 million in one year – citing one example where the average cost of a "safety incident" for an engaged employee was $63, compared with an average of $392 for a disengaged employee. (www.shrm.org)
Lost time due to accidents is increasing in cost! Just check out your insurance premiums to see what we mean. Implement a Safety Program to motivate employees to continue working safely and see the benefits of zero lost time due to accidents or injury.
A solution to increase safety awareness would be an internet based safety award redemption platform for your employees to redeem the points that they would earn for hours of safe work.

James, in answer to your question how I can help. Many times the safety person or employee doesn't know where to start. Or they get discouraged. Here is where I come in. I will help give you direction and encouragement. I'm someone you can bounce ideas off of. I'll be your coach. Your cost? Time, effort, commitment. My reward will eventually be realized. Anyone interested? I can be contacted at 1-800-293-5986 or jay@encouragingsafety.com.

Trip??? sounds like an executive bonus
(maybe if you work for bank of america)
How can you help Jay I'm interested?

Yeah but then you'd run into the same problem of people possibly not reporting accidents so they won't ruin the trip for everyone else - if that is what you are saying Bob. Or are you saying that employees get the trip regardless? That is an expensive reward by the way. I think other less expensive incentives could work just as well.

Managment has to be on board and supportative. I'm lucky to have that here, it does make the job easier. I think a TRIP would be hard to swing, but I like it.

Union shops, broken promises, upper management not supporting initiatives. These are all reasons that a positive safety culture is difficult to maintain. BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE! I challenge that if each one of us in our appropriate locations made a decision to accomplish what needed to be accomplished, we could do it. But then, when it comes down to it, it's still just a job, isn't it? I'm here to help you if you want it.

What do you think about a incentive that a company offers for a complete year of being safe on the job, then almost 200 employees do just that and are promised a "trip" as a result and then the company says, "no trip, sorry."

Difficult/near impossible in a union situation...

I like that too, not sure how hard it would be arrange the time off. Large corp has codes for everything. But I'm sure the manager could work something out.
