Who is using Back Supports?

With all that we do to ensure our work force has a safe place to work; liability for the employer is becoming a high focus on what type of PPE that is issued to your employees!

My question to you folks (the experts) is a 3 part question.

• First: Do you issue your employees back supports?

• Second: Do you Train… Continue

Frequently Asked Questions - Part 3

A few more...

How can I determine what size gloves my workers need?

Since proper fit is so essential to comfort and dexterity, it would be worthwhile to measure each worker’s hand. You may use a dressmaker’s cloth tape to measure around the hand, above the thumb and below the fingers. The diameter of the hand (rounded to the nearest half-inch) is numerically equal to the worker’s nominal glove size. This type of measurement, however, does not account for all… Continue

All Accidents are Preventable

Workplace accidents are an unfortunate part of the daily life of a safety professional, right? While that may be true, this does not mean that they are an unavoidable part. Upon reviewing a large sample of incident reports, accident investigation reports, and disciplinary action reports for safety violations, I have become more convinced than ever that all accidents are preventable.

If a root cause analysis is done on each incident, the observer will find that the most of the root… Continue

Marketing Makes It Stick

The Coca-Cola Company has a logo of a bottle cap that says, “Always Safety” on it. Around the bottle cap the message reads, “On Top of Everything We Do.” It is relevant to their business, catchy, and sends the right signals. Before you get to this point in your safety program, there are a few items that need to be in place.

You have management commitment, meaning that the senior managers are behind the safety program. They provide the necessary resources to fulfill the objectives of… Continue

Developing Safe Working Habits

Is safety first? We like to say it, put it on posters, and repeat it at company functions, but do we mean it? The first time we ask an installer to drive a vehicle that hasn’t been completely maintained, a fabricator to operate a table saw without a splitter or a guard, an office employee to jump on a forklift, or a loader to handle an awkwardly heavy load by himself, we send the real message—that safety is only first when it is convenient.

Instead of trying to prove such a… Continue

Cell phone use policy

Hi, I am new to the site and I am in need of a cell phone use policy. Not the canned-restricted or prohibited policies that are readily available. I am looking for a policy that outlines the use of cell phones as a tool for communication on a construction project.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the warm welcome.

I am new to this website. My background is in safety testing products; drug, alcohol and HIV. I am researching a new food testing product to see if it fits our company mission. Reminder: Check your AED...

I was at a Recreation Center in a local community this week and looked at the AED they had hanging on their wall. The battery was Dead and so the device could not be used.

If you have an AED that does NOT give you an audible alarm when the battery capacity is low then the only way you can verify battery capacity is by looking at the battery gauge on the device (some devices dont even have those). If the battery is dead you can not save a life. While you are at it, please check your… Continue
