A Brief Guide to Safe Work in Confined Spaces

Confined spaces are present all over the world, According to an estimate by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Authority (OSHA) that two million workers annually enter in confined spaces. In the world, many workers are injured and killed each year while working in confined spaces. The victims of confined space accidents include workers, engineering and technical people, supervisors and managers.

This blog post focuses on the risks involved in working in confined spaces and provide the solution to reducing such hazards. Confined space is virtually enclosed with limited access (a tank, container, vessel, pit, chamber, storage tank or any other similar place) and having only restricted openings for entrance. The confined space atmospheric conditions may include the presence of toxic gases or flammable materials, lack of oxygen, excessively high or low temperature and many other dangerous possibilities that are not compatible with the human body.
Key Characteristics that define a Confined Space:
•    Substantially enclosed
•    Hazardous place i.e. not designed for human occupancy
•    Suffocating and not comfortable to enter
•    Natural hazards, due to its location or contents.
•    Oxygen deficient or toxic atmosphere
•    Bad conditions due to work previously happened
•    Entrapment, crushing or falling objects
•    Rapid Explosions or fires
•    Electrocution
•    Temperature Extremes
•    Amplified noises
•    Unstable or dangerous work surfaces

Permit Required Confined Spaces:
There was an estimate that around 200 to 300 people die and thousands of people injure every year working in confined spaces. Thus, Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety has implemented a regulation set on confined space entry permit system. This entry permit includes the hazard assessment for confined space when one is fully experienced working in such conditions.

Responsibilities of a Confined Space Instructor:
•    Must understand the hazards that may occur anytime in a confined space
•    Should immediately available in case of any emergency situation
•    Aware of work procedures and reducing assessments for safe workplace.
•    Is directly responsible for work being performed in the confined work place.
•    Should maintain proper communication with the worker in the permitted space.

A bastion Safety Solutions firm has designed a top rated confined space entry and monitor training and certification course for individuals and instructors who may have to perform their work in these permit areas. The complete confined space training includes the basic introduction to confined space, workers' responsibilities, use of Personal protective equipment, hazard elimination and control etc.
