Choosing a health and safety training provider

Health and safety training can be crucial in the workplace, even for industries that are deemed ‘safe’. With so much training and advice on offer, it is important to choose the correct provider for your business. You will save time and money by knowing exactly what you want before embarking on any training course.

Before choosing a course or advisor, remember that it is ultimately the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe work environment for all employees. If the course you select misses some vital information, it will still be your responsibility to fill those gaps by seeking more reputable advice.

To avoid insufficient health and safety training, be sure to choose something that covers all the basics and the specifics you need. Fire safety is always wise no matter which industry you work in. Your workers will need to know how to prevent fire and what to do in cases where one starts. First aid is another basic requirement that employees should be aware of. You may have more specific needs from a course but a good course will cover basics such as this.

There may be PPE specific to your industry which employees need to be trained in how to use. Look for courses that will give your employees the specific knowledge they need in order to use the PPE required for their role.

Not all health and safety training is the same and there are different levels of training and various certificates available for courses. Before arranging health and safety training, be aware of the level employees may already have and what you need them to know in order to safely progress as a company. Some refreshment of the basics may prove valuable but you do not want to use crucial course time on things people already know when they could be learning something important and new. It is time and money you’d be wasting by recanting common knowledge.

One way to find the right health and safety course for you is to Google your criteria. If you find a course that seems perfect, try to open a dialogue with the organisers first. You need to be sure they understand your needs and that you are confident in their abilities. Ask for a run-down of the offered course and how it will benefit your workers. Ask about delivery methods and whether there is any flexibility in where the course can be delivered; many training providers now offer “in-house” training on your business premises so this is something else you may want to ask about if logistics are a consideration. You may need to contact a few people to find the best course for your budget.

While searching for a course, be sure to make the most of the internet and see if you can find feedback from other customers who have used a particular provider. And you don’t just need to rely on google; many sites out there have collated lists of reputable providers and these can really save some time.
