If you have a colleague who gets down to hairsplitting detail at every work she undertakes, to the extent that she takes half a day to complete a task that can be done in half an hour, you have a person with OCD in your midst. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a psychological condition in which the person with it is too obsessed with perfection. This penchant for perfection in everything they do can be painstaking for others who interact with them, but for those with it, it is a natural state of mind.

We all like to do a perfect job of whatever we undertake. But with those suffering OCD as a mental issue, it is something that consumes almost all their lives. Most people with OCD suffer in their personal and professional lives because they simply don’t let anything in their watch go away. They place excessive demands on their associates which could affect their lives negatively when taken to the extreme.

Having said this, it needs to be understood that many a time, those with OCD exhibit their behavior without their being aware of the effects or consequences of this characteristic. It is not often understood that OCD is but a manifestation of such people’s response to stress. They believe that they can ward off stressful situations by being compulsively clean and neat in whatever they do. This is, ironically, more stressful than being a stressbuster.

Why? Because they put themselves into a defense mode even when there is no need for this. This causes them to feel stressed, as a result of which they overplay their obsessive attitude. The result is that the mind is not in a position to think clearly in all these thoughts. They end up cultivating many avoidable negative thoughts.

The aim of this session is to give participants an understanding of what OCD is and how to deal with someone in the organization having it. Knowing what OCD is, is the root to understanding how to deal with it. When those working with a person with OCD get this basic understanding, they will learn ways of dealing with such colleagues. This understanding or lack of it can often make a difference to organizations.

In addition, knowing how to deal with people with OCD can often have the salutary effect of giving them a lease of life, while not doing so can ruin it. In essence, this knowledge can be a matter of saving the colleague and the organization. The ways by which this can be done is the aim of this learning session.

This goes beyond medications. Medications can serve a limited purpose in situations such as OCD. It is the way in which those with it are understood and handled that the higher solution lies. Donald will explain the more natural ways by which this can be done.
