When assessing safety needs for your business you’ve probably heard of the International Fire Code (IFC) or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), but have you decided how to implement either of them?

The IFC is currently adopted 42 US states, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the District of Columbia. The International Fire Code seeks to establish minimum standards for when it comes to fire prevention and fire protection systems, while also unifying and simplifying different fire code standards into a single, comprehensive code.

Prior to the International Fire Code, four separate standards for fire protection were used: the National Fire Prevention Code, the Standard Fire Prevention Code, the Uniform Fire Code, and the NFPA 1 – Fire Prevention Code. Different states and cities would adopt a different set of standards, ultimately leading to complications and confusion.

The solution seemingly emerged in the 1990s with the International Code Council attempting to unify and simply these codes with the International Fire Code. However, the NFPA 1 – Fire Prevention Code has held strong, and still has many proponents for using it over the International Fire Code, stating that the National Fire Protection Association more rapidly addresses issues, specifically when it comes to safety for fire fighters.

While this debate isn’t likely to die down any time soon — the IFC is a bit more widely adopted than the NFPA code — some regions have found a workaround: Adopting both codes and relying on the more stringent code in the event of conflicting ideas. Whichever your business chooses to go with, remember your worker’s safety sis most important.
