Welding fumes are toxic fumes which have different compositions depending on the materials that are being welded. This is why most of them contain harmful contaminants that can harm the lungs when inhaled. Limited exposure can still lead to debilitating health effects such as:

  • Lung inflammation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Bronchitis
  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Acute exposure to welding fumes can lead to serious health conditions some which can turn fatal with time. These include:

  • Permanent lung damage
  • Lung, urinary and larynx cancers
  • Eye, nose and throat infections that remain persistent
  • Metal fume fever
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Kidney damage
  • Damage to the nervous system
  • Asphyxiation due to the generated carbon monoxide gas.

How to reduce exposure

Here are some ways the aforementioned conditions can be prevented:

Training workers to understand the hazards of the materials they are welding via OSHA Hazard Communication training.

Ensuring that all welding surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to prevent toxic buildup of paint or solvents.

Ensuring all welders and workers know how to use PPE or personal protective equipment to avoid inhaling fumes and the gas they generate.

Training workers to work upwind when welding or outdoors.

OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach

The OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach training program is designed for anyone who is involved in the construction business such as foremen and safety supervisors. The program contains all that they need to know about OSHA safety standards and compliance issues along with violation repercussions.

Like all safety training courses, this one should also be taken as an orientation to occupational health and safety for workers. In other words, employers should ensure that they get additional training for the specific jobs they are responsible for. Once they complete the course, each student will be able to download their completion card from the website and will get their official DOL cards within 8 weeks.

Please be advised that the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach in no way meets the prerequisites of OSHA 500 or 501 in any manner. It is a completely different training module and should be taken as such.

The main objectives of the course include:

  • Learning how to implement safety measures that can prevent workplace accidents. Occupational health and environmental control will be included.
  • General safety and health essentials
  • Recognizing the importance of OSHA when it comes to maintaining safe work practices
  • Determining the precautions each job requires
  • Protecting workers who work on ladders and stairways on different work sites
  • Describing the dangers of confined spaces and how to address them
  • Recognizing common electrical and fire hazards as per OSHA standards
  • Recognizing the importance of scaffolding for workers on a construction site.

Sign up today to ensure employees are able to stay healthy and productive at the workplace. In turn, doing so should also reduce the risk of costly lawsuits and hefty violation charges.
