With HIPAA now being fully enforced and the government getting stricter and stricter about its implementation; practice or business or compliance officers need to be absolutely thorough about all the areas of HIPAA implementation. Given that there are enormous issues of risks that Covered Entities and their Business Associates need to address; the need to be fully aware of the changes that the Omnibus Rule has brought about for 2017 and beyond, along with other relevant updates, can never be overstated.

Knowing the ways of managing risks under HIPAA has become imperative for the following reasons:

  • Omnibus has brought about major changes into HIPAA
  • HIPAA, which was once sparingly enforced; has now changed in a big way, and Covered Entities and Business Associates need to be fully aware of what the latest developments and requirements are
  • It is in their interest to be equipped with this knowledge, since this is the surest means to protect their practice or business
  • In addition, the various State laws in place have also been increasing liability for patient remedies
  • It is absolutely essential for compliance and practice managers to understand the factors that might trigger a lawsuit or a HIPAA audit. To do this, they need to clearly know if they are doing things right
