Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in a variety of different workspaces: facilities, medical labs, and even office jobs. Construction sites are filled with serious and sometimes deadly hazards. Employers are almost always required to provide PPE for those working on the site, and so it’s crucial to provide equipment that best suits your environment. Carefully assess the present risks and identify the needs of your work site. Is there constantly forklift traffic? Is there risk of electrical shock? This will help you to pick the most appropriate equipment to keep your employee’s safe and compliant. The following is different types of PPE required on nearly every construction site:

Highly-Visible Clothing:  No construction site can be completely safe, so it’s important for employees to be highly visible and be seen by everyone. The most popular kind of hi-vis clothing is a safety vest, but hi-vis equipment also includes shirts, jackets, pants, headwear, gloves and more. Employees and anyone on the jobsite needs to be easily seen by vehicles, cranes, forklifts and other hazards. Remain compliant with current regulations by reviewing The American National Standards Institute (ANSI)’s PPE Code. Reflective and hi-vis clothes prevent injuries and can save lives.

Hard hats: Your brain is the most important organ in your body, and whether it’s a blow to the head or the risk of falling objects, a hard hat is often the last line of defense for your head.  Hard hats are required in nearly all construction sites, and it’s not one size fits all. There are both Type I and Type II levels of head protection, and classes. Each category has different levels of protection, including protection from shock or lateral head blows. It’s important to evaluate the hazards in the jobsite and choose the appropriate hard hat.

Protective footwear: Having proper work boots will not only keep workers comfortable throughout the work day, but also help to prevent slips, trips and falls. Similar to hard hats, it is important to assess the specific hazards and needs of your work site and purchase appropriate shoes. Furthermore, having decent footwear will encourage good posture and keep employee’s feet from fatiguing.
