Should Industrial Ventilation as the most important engineering controls solely from an industrial hygiene standpoint be the basis for the OSHA General Industry Ventilation Standard? Or should industrial safety, just as important and on the flip side of the coin also be included in the Ventilation Standard concerning fire and explosion hazards throughout the manufacturing sector?

When considering ventilation, I would use the OSHA Industry Ventilation Standard, but also consider the advice of those more highly trained in the discipline of fire safety, especially in the manufacturing sector. As an IH could provide proper capture velocities, make-up air, and consider velocity pressure, static pressure and total pressure, a fire science specialist could determine fail-safe methods to prevent explosions. I generally enlist the ideas of several people when considering proper ventilation for anything that could become hazardous.

On a side note, OSHA is planning on having a one day session of "OSHA Listens". OSHA is looking for help in developing programs that will enhance the efforts of employers, workers and unions to identify and address work place hazards. There was a press releas on Friday announcing this one day activity. Additional information is on the OSHA web site - www.OSHA.gov. Written submissions as well as in person presentations are welcomed. The Program will be on February 10, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The program will be in the auditorium at the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.
