Color Codes For Extension Cord Quartely Inspections

What's the hard fast rule for color codes for extension cord quarterly inspection. I have always been taught the OSHA suggests that we use a seasonal code i.e. white for winter, green for spring, red for summer, and orange for autumn. But now I'm getting an argument from the Army Corps of Engineers that that's not the case. They have written into the specifications for this job, white winter, red spring, orange summer, and green winter. I told them its probably a typo. They say they don't think so. When sub contractors are working multiple jobs for different prime contractors this causes confusion. I'm looking for documentation to back my argument.

Hi Alfred;  First I would encourage you to try to get the Corps to allow you to use the 100% GFCI protection option instead of the assured equipment grounding conductor program.  OSHA allows an "Either Or" option - see 1926.404(b)(1)(I).  Unless you have a full time tool crib person, it is very hard to stay on top of the program and it rarely works well.

If you must satisfy the Corps, you must also know that a true assured equipment conductor grounding program requires a daily, monthly, and then quarterly inspection.  All of these should be well documented.  Here are the codes according to the AGC and a few other web sites that I checked:

1st Quarter - Jan. - Winter = White

  2nd monthly - Feb = White + Yellow

  3rd Monthly - March = White, Yellow + Blue

2nd Quarter - April - Spring = Green

  2nd Monthly - May - Green + Yellow

  3rd Monthly - June - Green, Yellow + Blue

3rd Quarter - July - Summer = Red

  2nd Monthly - Aug. - Red + Yellow

  3rd Monthly - Sept. - Red, Yellow + Blue

4th Quarter - Oct. - Fall = Orange

  2nd Monthly - Nov. = Orange + Yellow

  3rd Monthly - Dec. = Orange, Yellow + Blue

If damage or repairs are found / needed = Brown

Use the GFCI option - It is a more fail proof protection for your crew members.  It's also easier to document compliance.

Good Luck - Terry
