We  build automated assembly and process equipment for a variety of industries. Usually when a machine is still in the design stage we do a formal risk assessment with the Project Manager, lead Mechanical Engineer, lead Electrical Engimneer, Assembly lead and the Machine Safety Coordinator (me). It was recently brought to my attention that the requirement to do an RA is not in our internal process flow chart and therefore not required by in house policy.

I have found a few specific instances that call for RA such as packaging equipment, and in some cases ANSI/RIA R15.06. I had thought it was a requirement of ANSI B11.TR3 but after further investigation, I have found that document is an opinion rather than a standard, even though most companise that offer Risk Assessment Programs base it on that document.

Is there an OSHA CFR Article or NFPA-79, or any other recognized standard that requires RA other than the EN 1050 and En 61508? I am looking for a US standard.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

There is no OSHA CFR that requires a risk assessment, however, it is best practice and as a Consultant for TN OSHA, I recommend it. Usually, my client purchase the equipment not manufacture it.

This topic reminds me of the in-store workplace safety article which discussed the:

4 Steps Involved in Effective Risk Management Assessments

It is necessary to have a risk assessment or the careful examination, mostly at work. This assessment tries to limit the cause could harm to people, and threats to life, the environment, including our workplace. Added more, provides as well the risk-management videos that involve practical steps to protect your business and staff.

I couldn't find the article by OSHA CFR as for now. I will search it and let you know. There also must be some guidelines which should explains the standard of RA to be used in the company.

Fire Safety Risk Assessment

There is a question I would like to ask you all. Is there any risk of buying a used machinery for workplace? Can it compromise the safety of the employee/student/trainee? What are your views on purchasing of used industrial, laboratory, and medical equipments?
