A practical guide to protecting your business from crime

It is essential to protect your business from crime, with both cybercrime and white collar crime very real threats to your company. When looking to protect your business and staff from the threat of crime, there is a lot to consider.

Putting together successful prevention methods requires careful planning and execution, as there is plenty to think about, from your stock, to the building and your staff. This practical guide should help you protect your business from criminal activity.

Start with a risk assessment

While risk assessments are often associated with health and safety, conducting an audit of your security setup and potential risks is an effective starting point.

Start by applying the five steps to risk assessment in the context of security, to assess all the potential risks to your business. Remember, risk assessment requires a bit of lateral thinking, in order to consider a wide variety of crime possibilities.

Get the right security systems

Having completed a risk assessment, you can then put together an appropriate security setup. The key thing to remember here is that the right security system for your business should match the specific needs you have identified.

CIA-style face recognition is probably unrealistic for most businesses, and the security systems you select need to be realistic, practical and affordable. The point of a security system is to deter criminals, as well as protecting your business if something happens.

Have clear staff policies

In addition to having the right setup, it's equally important that staff are well-trained and understand what they should do in the event of crime. A good policy should clearly lay out a set of consistent regulations and standards.

You should make sure all your employees understand you company’s code of conduct, and the repercussions of committing white collar crime against your business.

Combat cybercrime

Cybercrime is an increasing concern for businesses, and it is important that you and your staff are aware of the various types of cybercrime that exist, if you are to ensure effective preventative measures.

This should be included in staff policies and training, and you should also include a social media policy. To protect your company against cybercrime, conduct regular audits of your internal networks, and make sure all tech equipment is scanned and checked regularly.

Keep on top of your security measures as your business grows

It is important to start on the right foot with your security measures, but keeping on top of things as your company grows is equally crucial. You don’t want to outgrow your security systems, which would potentially make your company vulnerable to crime.

To make sure your security systems and policies are up-to-date, conduct regular risk assessments, as well as external audits and surveys, of your security systems and policies.

As your business develops, new crime threats will emerge, and ensuring ongoing protection from crime is about being diligent. Good luck - and stay safe!
