Great Tips to Maintain Good Mental Health

It is of a great importance to take care of yourself and enjoy the life to the fullest. Making simple changes to how you live doesn't need to take up loads of time or cost a fortune. Is there any reason not to start today?

Mental health affects how you act, feel and think on a daily basis, as well as influences how you connect with others, make decisions and handle stress. One in four people globally will experience some sort of a mental health issue in her or his life, so it should be a priority for everyone. But even if you aren't facing issues like depression or anxiety, focusing on your mental health could still make the upcoming year the best year yet.

People who are mentally healthy have:

  • high self-esteem and self-confidence
  • ability to build and maintain healthy relationships
  • balance between activity and rest, work and play
  • flexibility to adapt to change and learn new things
  • sense of meaning and purpose
  • ability to deal with stress
  • ability to laugh and have fun
  • sense of contentment

Being emotionally or mentally healthy isn't just about being free of anxiety, depression or other psychological issues. It refers to the presence of positive characteristics. These characteristics allow you to be present, and participate in life to the fullest through strong relationships and productive, meaningful activities. They will also help you cope when faces with life's stresses and challenges.

Here are some tips to improve your mental health:

Value yourself. Avoid self-criticism and treat yourself with respect and kindness. Make time for your favorite projects or hobbies. Learn to play an instrument, take dance lessons, plant a garden, become fluent in another language or do a daily crossword puzzle.

Surround yourself with good people. Make plans with your family and friends, or seek out events where you can meet new people.

Quiet your mind. Try meditation or some other relaxation exercises to improve your state of mind.

Take care of your body. Taking care of yourself physically. Avoid cigarettes and alcohol, drink plenty of water, eat nutritious meals, exercise and get enough sleep.

Give yourself. Volunteer your energy and time to help someone in need.

Set realistic goals. Decide what you want to achieve academically, personally or professionally and write down the steps you need to realize your goals. Aim high, but be realistic.

Learn how to deal with stress. Exercise, do Tai Chi, play with your pet, take a nature walk, or try journal writing. Smile often!

Break up the monotony. Try a new restaurant, take a walk in a different park, hang some new pictures or plan a road trip.
